For if the sun breed maggots in a dead dog, being a good kissing carrion –

I’m gonna need some help with this one. I get how the sun might breed maggots in a dead dog. I mean, there’s the dead dog and when the temperature suits them, the maggots get busy and start multiplying so despite the fact that it is not the sun’s literal breeding of the maggots, their reproduction is connected to its heat. Sense made.
However – who or what is the good kissing carrion? The body of the dead dog? And is it good for kissing of the maggots? The corpse is like the romantic hotel for maggots? Is that it? I guess part of the difficulty is that Hamlet does not complete this thought so it’s not clear whether the good kissing carrion applies to what’s come before or more closely to what might come after which ends up being Ophelia and maybe the idea is that he wants to tie a breeding ground for maggots with Polonius’ daughter. Which is really shitty if you think about it.
Anyway, all I know is, I don’t know anyone who’d be into kissing carrion. Although I suppose there’s always someone. Gross.

William Warburton put it as “being a God, kissing carrion,” as in the sun is a God and its kissing carrion breeds maggots in the carrion–that is, “being” modifies “God” rather than “carrion.”

I like that choice! Makes so much sense. Thank you.

        Not at all!

Really enjoying this project, by the way. Just discovered it a few days ago

First off the conversation is about one’s inability to be truthful and to comprehend the truth. I can’t shake the idea of this part of the conversation being a joke.

The sun being a God. The church maybe had it switched before mass printing? Tin hat off… a kissing carrion being the modern equivalent of pornography. God having created this whole situation with the maggots, I’d do my best to use it as pornography. haha. Do you have a daughter? Haha. Hamlet has referenced the daughter of Polonius immediately after explicit sexual material. When the reply comes oh yes. Haha. Hamlet knows he’s gotten three over total on Polonius. First referencing the kissing carrion and God, where polonius didn’t realize Hamlet was being perverted, next Polonius’s daughter being connected to the perversion while he himself played along, and finally polonius himself not realizing the jokes.

Throughout the play we get references to hamlets intellect above the other characters yet notice as Hamlet sometimes does his own limited understanding; being bound by his times. Kinda like the author.
