I named my dog Ophelia.
I thought it would make her obedient.
I thought, perhaps, when I clapped my hands and said, “Come,” she would come.
I thought she would sit when I said sit
And would fetch things when I threw them.
Turns out, though, that you have to be taught
To do those things. The environment and the teacher and the world
Must come together to make a person, or a dog, heel.
